Perfume FAQs: Usage, Storage & Fragrance Care

Find practical answers to common perfume questions, including how to apply and store fragrances, improve longevity, choose the right scent and use perfume safely.

Perfume Application & Usage

1. How should I apply perfume?

For best results, spray perfume lightly on pulse points such as your wrists, neck, behind the ears and inner elbows. These areas naturally generate warmth, which helps the fragrance develop and diffuse throughout the day.

2. How many sprays should I use?

Usually, 2–4 sprays are sufficient. The ideal amount may vary depending on the fragrance concentration, weather, occasion and your personal preference.

3. Should I rub my wrists after applying perfume?

No. Allow the perfume to dry naturally on your skin. Rubbing your wrists together can alter how the fragrance develops and may cause the top notes to fade faster.

4. Should perfume be applied to skin or clothes?

Perfume can be applied to both skin and clothing. Applying it to pulse points helps the fragrance develop naturally, while a light spray on clothing may help the scent remain noticeable for longer.

Always test delicate or light-coloured fabrics before spraying directly, as some fragrances may leave marks.

5. How can I make my perfume last longer?

Apply perfume to clean, moisturised skin, preferably after bathing. Well-moisturised skin generally retains fragrance better than dry skin.

You can also apply a small amount of unscented moisturiser before spraying the perfume.

Fragrance Performance

6. How long does perfume last?

Fragrance longevity varies depending on the perfume, concentration, skin type, climate, application method and surrounding environment.

The same fragrance may therefore perform differently from person to person.

7. Why does the same perfume smell different on different people?

Everyone has different skin chemistry, body temperature, natural oils and lifestyle. These factors interact with fragrance ingredients and can slightly change how a perfume smells and develops.

8. Why can I no longer smell my perfume after some time?

Your sense of smell can gradually become accustomed to a fragrance you are wearing. This is known as olfactory adaptation.

Others around you may still be able to smell the fragrance even when you notice it less.

9. Does perfume last longer on clothes?

Fragrance can sometimes remain on fabric longer than on skin because clothing does not produce natural oils or perspiration in the same way.

Avoid spraying perfume directly on delicate fabrics, jewellery, leather, silk or surfaces that may stain.

10. Does weather affect perfume performance?

Yes. Heat generally causes fragrances to project and evaporate faster, while cooler temperatures may make them develop more slowly.

You may therefore notice differences in fragrance performance between summer and winter.

Choosing a Fragrance

11. How do I choose the right perfume?

Consider the fragrance families and notes you usually enjoy, such as fresh, floral, fruity, woody, amber, spicy or oud-based fragrances.

Whenever possible, try the fragrance on your skin and allow it time to develop before making your final decision. You can also explore the PHIUM fragrance collection to compare available scents.

12. What are top, middle and base notes?
  • Top notes are the first scents you notice immediately after applying a perfume.
  • Middle or heart notes appear after the initial notes begin to settle.
  • Base notes develop later and usually provide the deeper, longer-lasting character of the fragrance.
13. Can men and women wear the same fragrance?

Absolutely. Fragrance is a matter of personal preference. While some perfumes may traditionally be marketed towards men or women, anyone can wear a fragrance they enjoy.

Browse PHIUM fragrances for men and PHIUM fragrances for women to discover different scent profiles.

14. Can I layer two perfumes together?

Yes. Fragrance layering can create a more personalised scent. Start with small amounts and experiment with fragrances that complement one another rather than applying too much at once.

Perfume Storage & Care

15. How should I store my perfume?

Store perfume in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.

A cupboard, drawer or dressing area away from windows is generally better than storing perfume in direct sunlight or in a hot bathroom.

16. Should perfume be kept in the refrigerator?

Refrigeration is generally not necessary. Keeping your perfume at a reasonably stable room temperature and away from heat and sunlight is usually sufficient.

17. Can perfume colour change over time?

Minor changes in colour can occur naturally because of the fragrance ingredients, exposure to air or ageing. A slight colour change does not necessarily mean that the fragrance is unusable.

18. Does perfume expire?

Perfumes can gradually change over time, particularly when exposed to heat, sunlight or air.

Proper storage can help maintain fragrance quality for longer. Refer to the product packaging for applicable manufacturing, batch and usage information.

Safety & Precautions

19. Can I use perfume directly on my skin?

Perfumes are designed for external use. However, individual skin sensitivities vary. If you have sensitive skin, consider performing a small patch test before regular use.

20. What should I do if perfume causes irritation?

Discontinue use if you experience redness, irritation, itching or discomfort. If irritation persists or is severe, seek appropriate medical advice.

21. Can perfume be sprayed near the eyes or face?

Avoid spraying perfume directly into the eyes, mouth or other sensitive areas. If accidental eye contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

22. Is perfume flammable?

Perfumes containing alcohol can be flammable. Keep the product away from flames, sparks, excessive heat and other ignition sources.

23. Should perfume be kept away from children?

Yes. Perfume should be stored safely and kept out of reach of children. The product is intended for external use only and should not be swallowed.

24. Can perfume be applied to broken or irritated skin?

Avoid applying perfume to cuts, damaged skin, freshly shaved irritated areas or skin that is already inflamed.

Product Information & Travel

25. Why might there be a slight difference between batches?

Fragrance products may occasionally show minor differences in colour or appearance between production batches because of ingredients and manufacturing conditions.

Such minor variations do not necessarily affect the intended fragrance character.

26. Why does perfume smell stronger immediately after spraying?

Immediately after spraying, the alcohol and top notes are most noticeable. Allow the fragrance a few minutes to settle on your skin before evaluating its true character.

27. Should I judge a perfume immediately after spraying it?

No. A fragrance develops in stages. For a better impression, allow it to remain on your skin for at least 15–30 minutes so that the heart and base notes can begin to emerge.

28. Can I carry perfume while travelling?

Yes, but airline and transportation rules regarding liquids may apply. For air travel, check the current baggage and liquid restrictions of your airline or airport before travelling.

29. Can I transfer perfume into another bottle?

You can use a suitable perfume atomiser for travel or convenience, but transferring the fragrance may expose it to additional air or contamination.

Use a clean, fragrance-compatible container and close it securely.

30. Where can I find more information about a particular fragrance?

Visit the PHIUM fragrance collection and open an individual product page for fragrance notes, available sizes, product characteristics and other relevant details.
